Changes to the Renewable Energy TargetWritten by: Beth McLachlan, EPA Victoria This article follows the Introduction to the Renewable Energy Target and How can your business benefit from the Renewable Energy Target articles that were in previous editions of Carbon Matters. Since these articles were written a number of changes have been made to the Australian Renewable Energy Target Scheme. This article will discuss these changes and how they relate to your business. Engaging your People in Carbon ManagementWritten by CIN member: Tim Cotter from Awake Putting a price on carbon would introduce a compelling motive for businesses to make changes to the way they operate in order to adjust to a system which rewards environmentally efficient behaviour and punishes wasteful and unsustainable behaviour. In the absence of this big financial motive, the onus continues to be on organisations to instead make voluntary changes. This article looks at the how businesses can engage people to make these changes. EPA's Internal Cap and Trade SchemeWritten by Beth McLachlan, EPA Victoria In addition to protecting the environment, the Victorian EPA is committed to achieving real reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its own operations. EPA went carbon neutral in 2005/06 and continues to reduce its energy use and GHG emissions through various activities including fleet management and greening of their buildings. In addition to these initiatives, for the 2009 calendar year, EPA ran an internal Carbon Cap and Trade Scheme (the Scheme) between its seven sites. This article will discuss the development, implementation and key learnings from this Scheme. Wannon Water Biosequestration ProjectWritten by CIN Member: Brad Henderson, Wannon Water Wannon Water has made significant progress on its sustainability journey since first developing a Sustainability Strategy in 2008. The Corporation's progress has included a focus on energy and carbon management. Specifically, we have established a target to reduce carbon emissions by 10% in 2013 from a 2006/07 baseline. This requires an annual reduction of approximately 3,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). To help meet this target, Wannon Water has established a project to plant over 540,000 Blue Mallee trees which, based on modelling, will capture and store approximately 190,000 tonnes of CO2e over 50 years. This is equivalent to the annual emissions of 316 Victorian homes or 840 cars, and the project provides for long term net reductions in carbon emissions. Carbon Management: AssessWritten by: Georgia van Rooijen and Kim le Cerf, EPA Victoria Each of the previous six editions of Carbon Matters has included a regular article about one of the Carbon Management Principles and how you can apply them to your business. This article looks at the seventh principle: Assess. CIN Member Interview: Kate Noble from the Voluntary Carbon Markets Association (VCMA)The Carbon Innovators Network (CIN) Member Interview is a regular article which profiles a CIN member and asks them to respond to questions relating to their personal and professional experiences in sustainability. In this issue, Carbon Matters introduces CIN member Kate Noble. You can find Kate on the member directory.
